That’s right—Rioja’s Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 was named the best wine of the year by Wine Spectator’s 2020 Top 100 Wines List, giving it a rating of 96.
Two other wines from Rioja also made Wine Spectator’s top 100 list. Coming in at #25 is the “harmonious and generous” Montecillo Rioja Reserva 2013. At #55 on the list, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja Rosado Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2009 is unique in that it’s the only Gran Reserva Rosé in the world.
The recognition of these diverse wines from Rioja is a testament to the region and its vast history of winemaking. Wine Spectator put the spotlight squarely on the lasting beauty of Rioja’s unique ageing process, highlighting the lasting beauty of Gran Reserva and Reservas from centenarian Rioja wineries that are a great value, aged to perfection and ready to enjoy.
